Institution of Eminence Status Granted to IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay and IISc Bangalore

The institution of eminence status will grant greater autonomy to these institutes as compared to other higher institutions

IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay and IISc Bangalore will enjoy greater autonomy after receiving the institution of eminence status as compared to other higher institutions of India. While the institution of eminence tag was granted to private institutes like Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS Pilani and Jio Institute.

Around 103 applications were sent to UGC including by JNU and Delhi University for IoE status. Well, the UGC was very selective in terms of giving the prestigious status to universities and only three of them nailed in the race of eminence status.

The government will release the grant of Rs 1000 crore to these renowned institutions in next five years. Additionally, the HRD ministry also lay stress on the educational opportunities that no student will be denied of getting the scholarships, interest waiver, fee waiver and other equity principles.

With given autonomy, these institutions are free to take their decisions regarding students as what should be the fees for domestic and foreign students and also free to have a flexible course duration and structure.

Moreover, their academic collaborations with foreign institutions will be exempt from approvals of government or UGC except institutions based in MEA and MHA’s list of negative countries.
