The technology was transferred to New Delhi-based Bluebird Water Purifiers, in the presence of Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Science & Technology and Vice-President of CSIR.

Affordable and maintenance free

Commenting on the development, Dr Vardhan said that contamination through drinking water is the main cause of increase in morbidity and mortality mostly amongst children. Oneer, developed jointly by CSIR-IITR, will give access to clean and safe drinking water at a cost of only 2 paise per litre.

The Minister further said that the community level model capacity is 450 LPH which can be increased up to 5000 to 1 lakh litre per day. The system is also free of maintenance and membrane.

“The technology will be helpful especially for rural people since it can be solar-powered and this development is in line with the ‘Make in India’ mission,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shkekar C Mande, Director General, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR said that presently, a large part of rural community in India is consuming water that is not in accordance with the drinking water quality standards of WHO.

Eliminates all pathogens

The technology can be useful for constant treatment of water. It eliminates all pathogens that are the cause of diseases like virus, fungi, bacteria, cyst and protozoa and provide safe and clean drinking water to domestic and communities settings. The water treated by the system is according to the national and international norms like Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), World Health Organisation (WHO), etc, prescribed for potable water.

The smaller unit of drinking water disinfection system – Oneer, is suitable mainly for homes, street food vendors and small establishments.
