IIT Kharagpur to Set up AI Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad Soon


The institute is also mulling a research park in the long run to focus on areas like AI, cybersecurity, defence and aerospace, advanced manufacturing and robotics.

IIT Kharagpur is setting up a Centre of Excellence (COE) in Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Manufacturing in Hyderabad.

The AI Centre is scheduled to be opened in March 2019 in Kukatpally, IIT Kharagpur’s programme manager in Hyderabad, Utkarsh Prasad, revealed on Thursday.

In addition, the institute is also in talks with the Telangana government for land to establish a research park which will focus on areas like AI, cybersecurity, defence and aerospace, advanced manufacturing and robotics.

The Centre will be used to train professionals in AL and carry out research and industry projects, Prasad said.

Site for AI Centre identified

Telangana IT Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan informed that the government has already identified 2000 sqft space in Kukatpally for setting up the AI Centre. He added that a MoU with soon be inked between IIT-Kharagpur and the Telangana government in this regard.

Before the launch of the CoE, the institute is looking to start a six-month course in AI and ML from February 2019 in Hyderabad.

“While the Centre of Excellence (CoE) will come up eventually in AI and Advanced Manufacturing, before that they plan to offer a six-month programme called Foundation in AI and ML which will start in February. Their board has approved the decision and we will be signing the formal memorandum of understanding (MoU) soon,” said Ranjan.

To share the building with Nasscom CoEs 

According to Ranjan, the AI centre will be in the same building that will house Nasscom’s COEs on Data Science (DS) & Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Cyber Security. Telangana government had signed an agreement with Nasscom in February to set up the two COEs.

The board of directors for CoE on AL&DS has been constituted and it will start functioning from February 2019, said Ranjan. He added that the CoE on Cyber Security has already started on a small scale and they are undertaking some programmes in association with T-Hub.

While NIIT co-founder R S Pawar has been appointed as the Chairman of the governing council for CoE on Cyber Security, Mindtree chairman Krishnakumar Natarajan will serve as the chairman of the governing council of CoE on AL&DS.
