International Institute of Information Technology, Naya Raipur (IIIT-NR), a state university established as a joint venture between Chhattisgarh government and NTPC Ltd, has started an integrated Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) programme in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science from academic year 2019-20.
In addition, the institute has launched an M. Tech programme in AI and data science from the academic year 2019-20. With this, the IIIT-NR will become the first institutes in the country to provide both B. Tech and M Tech programmes in these emerging and futuristic technologies.
The new integrated programmes are developed to provide students a strong foundation of theory as well as practice of disruptive technologies such as AI, machine learning (ML) and data science.
Briefing about the programmes, Dr Rajarshi Mahapatra, Dean (Academics), IIIT-NR, said, “The new B. Tech programme emphasises on both fundamental concepts from the fields of computer science, statistics and mathematics that are essential for analysing the growing amount of data captured by many sources such as internet, social media, sensors, automobiles, environment, etc.”
“In this programme, students will do projects to analyse the impact of data-driven decision making on all areas like agriculture, security, healthcare, commerce, industry, banking, insurances, transportation, city planning, etc., in line with IIIT-NR project-based learning,” he added.
Huge scope for such programmes
Dr Pradeep K. Sinha, VC and Director, IIIT Naya Raipur, said, “The fast-paced growth of data and the amount of knowledge that is being drawn out of this data has created many new and exciting opportunities for students having deep knowledge of data science and AI.”
“The scope of our new B. Tech program in DSAI shall include methods and algorithms involved in collecting, curating, managing, analysing and transforming data into information, which in turn enables the creation of knowledge and decision-making in a variety of application domains,” Dr Sinha stated.
As AI, ML, data science and other emerging technologies are all set to have a fundamental impact on worldwide labour market in coming years, there is a huge demand for professionals in these fields.
