Alibaba co-organised its first Natural Language Processing (NLP) hackathon in India to tackle AI and network information challenges

BMU Alibaba Cloud Tianchi Hackathon 2018

Alibaba Group’s cloud computing arm, Alibaba Cloud recently concluded its first Natural Language Processing (NLP) Hackathon in India. It jointly organised the event with Zhejiang Lab and BML Munjal University (BMU). Over a100 students from BMU participated in the day-long event.

During the hackathon, students solved NLP problems and interacted with experts from Zhejiang Lab and Alibaba Cloud. They exchanged ideas on artificial intelligence and network information. Through the hackathon, organisers hoped that students would be able to adapt to newer career aspirations in the future.

Prof. M.B. Srinivas, Dean, School of Engineering and Technology, BML Munjal University said, “These hackathons are great ways to showcase the practical skills needed in the workplace, and students can learn more problem-solving skills through competitions. Our students have created world-class solutions for NLP problems, and Tianchi hackathon is a great platform to present their ideas and talents.”

The winning team of the NLP hackathon, ‘thecodingcartoon’, won a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. The second and third prize winners had received cash prizes of Rs. 30,000 and 20,000 respectively.

Dr Alex Li, General Manager, Alibaba Cloud India said that the main aim of the Tianchi platform was to collaborate and work with great minds across the globe. He also regarded India as the talent powerhouse which provides solutions to real-world issues using emerging technologies like big data and AI. He added, “The NLP hackathon is one example to engage with students and explore new models of crowd innovation.”

Hackathon collaboration

Zhejiang Lab’s collaboration with BMU and Alibaba Cloud provided a platform to help students showcase innovation and creativity using their technical skills.     The Tianchi hackathon, organised along with Alibaba Cloud. Su Min, HR Manager, Zhejiang Lab, said, “We look forward to many more collaborations with Alibaba Cloud in the future.”
